Experimenting with niche site placements
Internet advertisers and marketers should seriously consider placing at least a portion of
their Internet ad budgets aside for experimenting with niche site placements. "On average,
search engines are a driving force behind these trends, enabling broadbanders to venture
beyond the major brands to the niche sites they previously never knew existed," said Cate
Riegner of Media-Screen. "On a typical day, 62 percent of Web sites that respondents mention
get less than one million unique visitors," says Riegner.

AOL changes its course of action in Europe
AOL's proposed acquisition follows a turnaround in its strategy. The company recently divested
itself of its ISP businesses in Europe, with a plan of offering its content services for free,
supporting the business with advertising. AOL is also offering to manage online advertising sales
and supply editorial content for ISPs' portals.

Industry observers think it's already too late for Microsoft's MSN Live
As Gates spoke, a Microsoft employee demonstrated Virtual Earth as an example of the type of
Microsoft innovation the company is pursuing. Using an X-Box controller, the employee flew
through a 3-D replica of Las Vegas projected on screen. "This is pretty fun. It's also
practical," said Justin Hutchinson, who ran the demo during Gates' talk. "If I'm new to town,
I can get a sense of where everything is." However, even people who praised the product wondered
if it might exceed the needs of the average person.
